Where do seniors
want to live in their remaining years? A tropical paradise?
A luxury townhouse villa? According to AARP, ninety percent
of Americans 50 and over just want to be able to stay in
their own homes and communities. This national obsession
isn't surprising. Our home is synonymous with independence.
It's a zone of comfort and security and a place to socialize
with friends and family. It's no wonder that older Americans
prefer to live at home rather than in an assisted living
facility or a nursing home!
But physical changes and challenges go hand-in-hand
with aging. The fact is that the chances of developing a
disability or other mobility limitation increase as we get
older. And unfortunately, many elder Americans don't know
where to turn to make their homes safer and more—until
now.
The senior population
is exploding, and that makes owning an In Your Home
franchise, ripe with opportunity. Just look at a few facts:
– In 1900, there were three million
Americans 65 and over. Today, there are 35 million. And
that number is expected to double over the next 30 years
to 70 million!
– The 50 and over population
is the fastest growing consumer segment in America. It
accounts for 86 million people or 40% of the U.S. adult
population. By 2020, their ranks will swell to more than
115 million.
– People are living longer.
In 1900, the average life expectancy was 47. Today, it's
almost 78. And more people are living even longer than
that! Since 1990, there has been a 73 percent increase
in the number of people who reached 100.
– But the
best news for In Your Home franchise owners is that the
market outlook for home remodeling and repairs targeted
to seniors is hot! In fact, the trend for older Americans
to stay in their homes is so huge, there's a name for
this phenomenon: It's called "aging in place." And according
to a survey, a whopping 75% of home remodelers report
an increase in requests for aging-in-place projects.
